I’ve been trying to register my Abarth for months - some title issues - and I was finally able to do it on Tuesday. I walked in the DMV, and my ticket number was 039 - they were serving 850. 189 people ahead of me. Budget cuts - they closed a ton of locations and now everyone has to go to the few leftover ones.
Luckily, they send me to the dealer desk to register my car, so no waiting. Lady can’t find my paperwork. She checks three times and finally finds it. I am very happy, because I already thought I’d have to come back again. Then she gives me the registration cost - $513 for a $15k car!! Apparently, all they care about is their taxable value, not the actual paid price. $513.... damn. I thought it would be under $300.
Then, she tells me I have to go back in the line to register my other two cars - we just bought matching Forester XTs ( I know, I know...). By the time I sat on the bench, there were still 100+ people ahead of me.
Few minutes later, I hear my name on the speakers - it turns out she gave me the wrong plates. I am happy to go to my car and exchange them, and to thank me, she takes care of me right there and then - no waiting for 100 people. Yes!! Then she gives me the cost for two cars - $1030 more.
So, it didn’t take nearly as long as it could (thank you DMV lady) but it cost me over $1500 to register three cars. Ugh.

A new Abarth or an old one?

$1500 to register 3 cars? I fucking hate taxes.
Guess the DMV skipped the pot and went straight for the crackpipe.

At this point, you might as well be in the state of denial!
I’ll see myself out, thanks.

Alas, a new one. It is 2014 Abarth GQ Edition convertible, with a few tasteful mods. OEM Abarth steering wheel and exhaust, custom pedals, Magneti Marelli wheels, Abarth Competizione badges.... it is my fair weather baby :)

Seriously...I already paid the taxes - this is the registration cost on top of the taxes.

Whaaaaaaaaat? Dude, you just killed any hope I ever had of moving there. That is the most obscene thing I’ve ever heard. I’m saddened and stunned.
Good thing you had the funds available and on hand. Could you imagine buying 3 cars and not being able to plate them? I’d rent a room off of someone in Tennesee or someshit and register/insure them there...
Christ, I thought rape was illegal in all 50 states!

I knew that the Forester XTs would cost me a lot. I was just pissed that the Abarth was that much - I thought I did well with the low purchase but they base the taxes on some imagined value of the car in their computers.

$513 to register a car?
mate , I’m packing my bags to join you there!!
the rego on my Mitsubishi Lancer is $650! (no joke!)
sadly the car is worth only $200.00

Where the hell do you live?

Damn, where do you live? By the time a car is worth $2000 around here, plates might cost you $50 for a year.

That is insane, and to add to it, you probably paid twice for a new Lancer versus what the price is here. In AU, they start around 25000 AUD, in USA, they start at 17500 USD. I guess that is close to 23000 AUD after the conversion, so not quite twice.

mine is an 04 , was around $18k new.
now has 606k km on it.

Wow! 378k miles on a Lancer. That might be unheard of here. Unfortunately, Mitsubishi in the USA has turned into a “we’ll finance you when no one else will” kind of car company. They are trying to turn it around with some decent crossovers, but they are selling in negligible numbers compared to a RAV4 or CR-V. They are selling a lot of Mirages, but again, those go mostly to people which can’t afford better.
I miss the old Mitsubishi with the Pajeros, Monteros, AWD turbocharged Eclipses, Galant VR-4s, 3000 VR-4s, Starions...good old days.

i hear ya on the stuff they don’t have.
they need a Carlos Ghosn to swoop in and reinvigorate the company.

Is that just the registration fee or is that like a property tax and registration rolled together?
![]() 04/01/2016 at 10:10 |

Registration only. Taxes are done at purchase time

I had no idea rego was that much. Is it more for more expensive cars?

Madre de dios. In SC you pay a property tax and registration fee every other year, and just the property tax on alternating years. Taxes on my Jeep, which might be worth 6-7K are around 85 per year. Registration fee, again only paid every other year, is 25 dollars flat. No state inspections either. You do have to pay sales tax when you purchase as well, but it's not really all that much.

In CO, you pay the tax when you buy the car, anywhere from 4-ish to 8-ish %. I am lucky, my taxes are only 4.25%.
